Dr. Katie

Dr Katie originates form Cornwall in the south west of England, growing up amongst rare breed cattle, horses, pigs, geese, cats and dogs. She even started her own hedgehog rescue hospital aged six! Not wanting to leave her horse at home, she took her while she studied at university. During her vacations, Katie spent time working in a turtle rescue centre in Athens and researching goat nutrition in Costa Rica. After completing her Honours degree in Animal Science, she then graduated with a Batchelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery from Edinburgh Vet School in 2006.
Katie loves to travel and bought a one-way ticket to Australia straight after graduation. She loved it so much, she stayed – becoming an Australian Citizen in 2012. Katie’s veterinary career started in a busy mixed practice in NSW. After meeting her husband, they moved to Darwin, where she spent 5 years working in a tropical small-animal practice, providing weekend and after-hours services. It was an incredible learning experience, as the nearest Referral centre was over 3000km away! Katie has worked as a locum, in emergency, for the RSPCA and for various small-animal clinics. In 2017, Katie joined the team at SAH, diversifying into exotics. Katie enjoys treating the wide range of animals seen at SAH, and regularly participating in further study, including Taronga Zoo’s wildlife programme. As well as consulting and performing surgeries, she is also heavily involved in a management role at SAH as the Chief Veterinarian.
When not working, Katie is a mum to two young children. She enjoys the beach, scuba diving, catching up with friends, gardening, camping and travel. Her family includes many rescue animals. Fortunately, living on property, she is able to have a flock of free-range rescue chooks, two beautiful dogs, plus a sweet bearded dragon- Loveheart Chloe.
