Why Microchipping Matters

Microchipping has been a legal requirement for dogs and cats under the NSW Government Companion Animals Act since 1998. At Sugarloaf Animal Hospital, we see as many as four dogs each week successfully returned home thanks to their microchip.

Microchipping provides a permanent form of identification that can reunite lost pets with their owners quickly. Even for rabbits, birds, and other non-traditional pets, microchipping is a valuable way to ensure they can be safely returned if lost.

What’s Involved in Microchipping

Our microchipping procedure is designed to prioritise your pet’s comfort and safety:

The implantation area is clipped and aseptically prepared to reduce the risk of infection
Local anaesthetic is applied to minimise pain during insertion
The procedure is quick, safe, and generally pain-free
Registration and documentation support to ensure your pet’s details are up to date
For birds, microchipping is performed under general anaesthesia for a stress-free and pain-free experience
