Mel

Melanie grew up on the coast of beautiful Port Stephens. From a young age, she was dedicated to all animals great and small and has grown up with an array of animals including, dogs, cats, rabbits, birds/poultry, horses, snakes, a ferret, rats and fish! Melanie always dreamed of working with animals and began her career with her first job being at the local pet store. During high school, Melanie completed a Certificate II in agriculture and a Certificate II in animal studies, knowing she was committed to a career in the animal industry. Melanie has a particular interest in horses – She began riding at the age of 12 and since starting to ride, she has gained experience in many disciplines and has had the pleasure of working with high-level coaches, riders and horses.
On completion of her high-school certificate, Melanie began studying at Charles Sturt University to complete a Bachelor of Equine Science in 2018. Melanie also has completed a certificate in equine sports massage and has her own business in equine body work; MEL Equine. During Melanie’s studies she worked at the RSPCA, learning much more about animal welfare and the re-homing of animals. In 2019, Melanie joined the team at Sugarloaf Animal Hospital as a receptionist. Melanie has expanded her knowledge into exotic animal care and in 2021 began her qualifications in veterinary nursing and has transitioned into a nursing role within the hospital. With Melanie’s existing knowledge of equine massage, she is now working alongside Dr Lindy to promote canine physiotherapy and rehabilitation at Sugarloaf Animal Hospital. Melanie is also the resident baker alongside receptionist Aimee, making Birthday cakes for the team.
When not working, Melanie enjoys competing in dressage competitions, camping, going to the beach, gardening, baking, and socialising with friends or family. Melanie’s family reside at her country home and include a husband, a dog, a cat, two horses, chickens a duck and a saltwater fish tank.
